Renovation
It’s true, we’re getting a makeover, our first one since launching in 1981, and it’s bittersweet. The new renovation will bring a new fashion-forward look to the lobby, bar and restaurant, but with the focus on the guest, exactly in line with the “Helmsley” brand.
The design brief from the Helmsley called for changes that would improve the guest experience—for example, what the customer touches feels and sees during the check-in process.
Upon entering, all guests will be greeted and directed to individual registration desks, where they will be comfortably seated in Macassar Ebony wood chairs. “No more standing at a typical ‘Fort Apache-style’ check-in desk,’ says the hotel’s GM, Mark Briskin.

Inspired by Mrs. Helmsley’s appreciation for luxurious materials and fabrics, the designer, Jeff Ornstein, focused on providing guests with a “sumptuous, tactile experience.” Rich Brentano fabrics line the seating. To create visual interest a sculptural Barovier & Toso Murano Italian glass chandelier drops from the nearly 20’ ceiling, and the walls are textured with decorative Bisazza mosaic tile, along with an East Indian Rosewood and Venetian plaster.
The hotel will be fully operational during the summer. You can see the finished project by year’s end.
