There are certain number combinations that are quintessentially New York. “212” is one that is confirmed as culturally and socially significant in a famed episode of Seinfeld. Remember how devastated Elaine Benes was when she was issued a “646” vs. the time-honored “212” area code? “42,” as in 42nd Street, is another treasured and prestigious New York number. Broadway, Times Square, Grand Central Station, Tudor City, The Chrysler Building, Bryant Park and the New York Public Library call the numbered street home — as does the New York Helmsley Hotel. 42nd Street is globally recognized as a major landmark with important central proximity to everything from the United Nations to the Empire State Building (one held by the Helmsmen’s) and some stellar Fifth Avenue shopping (another nice number!).
Sure, prior to the mid 90s 42nd wasn’t exactly a savory a place, but clearly the legendary Leona Helmsley didn’t grow her and Harry’s hotel empire without some savvy investment foresight. Indeed today we see that 212 42nd Street is powerfully and unapologetically New York. To score both a “212” and a spot on 42nd is what truly makes the address of the Helmsley a numerical gold mine.
